The cost of living here is high and salaries are, many times, lower than in the rest of the country. Monroe County is not interested in growing population density and is mandated to protect the fragile environment. Rules for building in incorporated areas may be different than for unincorporated areas. A real estate agent with a good working knowledge of the system is important.

A visit to paradise may be all that you want. A vacation rental is often a nice alternative to staying in a hotel or resort. Availability will depend on the area and your length of stay.
